<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.\u00a0was born<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lafayette,\u00a0<\/span><\/a>L<\/span>o<\/span>ui<\/span>siana\u00a0<\/span>i Kennedy<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>obtained a BS in Mathematics in 1972 from Grambling State <\/span>University<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Louisiana<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison,<\/span>where he<\/span>\u00a0studied under legendary book designer\u00a0<\/span>Walter Hamady<\/span>\u00a0and earned an MFA in 1997. He later taught graphic design at the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at\u00a0<\/span>Indiana University<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n From an early age, Kennedy was interested in <\/span>l<\/span>etters and books and studied calligraphy for several years. At the age of 40<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Kennedy visited Colonial Williamsburg, a Virginia living history museum, and was mesmerized by an 18<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century<\/span>\u00a0print shop and book bindery demonstration. The incident so influenced<\/span>\u00a0him that he studied printing at a community-based letterpress shop in Chicago, and within a year<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0quit his AT&T systems analyst job, which he\u00a0<\/span>had held for nearly two decades, to continue<\/span>\u00a0printmaking studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Kennedy creates prints, posters, and postcards from handset wood and metal type, oil-based inks, and eco-friendly and affordable chipboard. Many of the posters are inspired <\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0p<\/span>roverbs, and quotes Kennedy locates or\u00a0<\/span>quotes that\u00a0<\/span>potential clients provide<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n Having grown up during the Civil Rights Era in the 1960s, Kennedy saw the rise of Black Nationalism in the 1970s, and now living in the Post-Civil Rights era, Kennedy has seen how these have shaped Black identity and has used these as inspiration in his work. <\/span>His\u00a0<\/span>work is a blend of social commentary, folk art, and graphic design, creating resonant pieces that challenge traditional boundaries of art and politics. Kennedy isn\u2019t afraid to push the boundaries and uses large graphic typography, bold <\/span>colors<\/span>\u00a0and language that catch the eye and inspire<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0others in the design field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Kennedy is known to use the words of popular activists like Ros<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0Parks and peaceful protests like the Selma to Montgomery marches\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0illustrate the names of lost lives during these movements<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>he words themselves are central to Kennedy’s work, serving not just as visuals but to convey messages that are thought-provoking and sometimes confrontational.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Using hand presses, he produces large editions of wildly colorful typographically driven posters of inexpensive chipboard stock, posters which are often so rioto<\/span>usly layered with vibrant colors of ink as to retain a wet iridescence and tackiness\u00a0<\/span>years after they are printed. His working method<\/span>\u00a0often involves overprinting multiple layers of text resulting in no two prints being truly identical<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Th<\/span>e unevenness of the printing process, where some letters appear more faded or offset than others, becomes part of the aesthetic and conveys a sense of human imperfection, struggle, and resilience. This imperfect quality also adds a layer of emotional depth to his prints, which suggests that social issues cannot be neatly resolved or erased.<\/span><\/p>\n His work has been exhibited at a range of museums, galleries, and libraries, including the <\/span>Museum of Modern Art Library,\u00a0<\/span>and the<\/span>\u00a0Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia
