The Female Photo Shoot

I have finally reached the point where I am bored with taking photos of flowers, butterflies and nature.  I still think nature is awesome, don’t get me wrong.  But, after thousands of pictures of flowers and butterflies, I am craving something different.  I have wanted to do a series of photos of women for a very long time – not really sure why I never tried to make it happen before now.  But, it is ON!

This coming Sunday, a handful of my girlfriends have agreed to model for me (free of charge).  I am going to use the house we are rehabbing as our shooting location.  It is gutted to the studs right now and I think it has potential.  I am so very excited!  All my friends are so damn cute (I hope I can do them justice with my pictures).  The results shall be posted as soon as I am done editing them.  Might even use them to apply for a show at The Chapel gallery downtown…

New Camera!

I got a new camera last week.  It is a Canon 50D which is just the upgraded version of my old 30D.  I must say… I am totally in love with this camera!  The photos are just wonderful!   I took this one over the weekend in St. Charles.  Great colors, perfect light balance.  The camera is fast and easy to use.  A bit heavier than my old one but totally worth the arm ach at the end of a days shooting with it.  There is a part of me that just can’t believe it is mine.  It is such a superb camera and it’s all mine!   I am actually excited to shoot another wedding with it.  Will post more wonderful pictures soon.

Flowers

I love flowers. Of all kinds. It is very fascinating to me how you can put this little seed in soil, add water and get this big beautiful, colorful, complex piece of art.

This flower if from a bunch I bought last week and I was taking it out to throw it away and I just found it so very pretty that I started wondering around the house with it taking pictures. I’m very pleased with this image and I think I just may have to order a large print of this to hang in my house.

Laura, Josh & Ruthie

Back in wedding mode.

I shot the most emotional wedding yesterday that I have ever done – may turn out to be the most emotional of all the weddings I will ever photograph. The wedding was my cousin Laura to her now husband Josh (very sweet couple). They had Ruthie almost a year ago and she was born with pretty much half a heart, she is in the hospital now waiting on a new one.

It has been a very emotional year for them with many highs and lows and they wanted pictures with Ruthie on their wedding day. Seeing that tiny baby hooked up to all those tubes and machines is such a sobering experience. All the stupid things I see people getting upset about seem so trivial in comparison. Laura & Josh are such strong people, I have so much respect for them.

The photos I took at the hospital have got to be some of the most emotional and honest photos I have ever taken. I’m so grateful that they trusted me and wanted me there to capture that very special moment for them. I almost want to do an entire body of work around Ruthie and Laura & Josh. It’s a rough line though because I don’t want to be disrespectful or invasive. Maybe I will just go visit her more often and support them in anyway I can.

Probably need to stop writing now because I’m starting to cry again. I’ll post more of Josh & Laura later on.

Update

I’m currently working on putting an album together for the last wedding I shot so nothing fun to post right now. I was trying to add some old photos of a trip to Iowa but the image upload on my site is not working correctly right now. But please bare with me and hopefully those will be up soon.

I’m shooting another wedding in a couple weeks. They are pretty exhausting but I do enjoy doing them. Of course, I only do 1 or 2 a year so I don’t burn myself out on them. I don’t think I would want to do it full time. There is a lot of work that goes into getting the images ready for the couple.

Maybe I’ll post some pictures from my sketchbook just to show what ideas have been playing around in my head the past couple weeks.
